Nabaya Shokuhin Kogyo Kabosu Jelly

Kabosu is a juicy citrus fruit closely related to yuzu with a sharp lemon-like sharpness and a unique fragrance. While it’s commonly used in Japan to enhance fish and hot pot dishes, it’s considered a regional item for Ōita Prefecture where is it widely grown in the areas of Taketa and Usuki and featured in sweet items such as this Nabaya Shokuhin Kogyo Kabosu Jelly.

We picked up this box of the jelly from the regional food fair at Shinjuku Metropolitan Building in February 2018.

A beautiful piece of paper accompanies the box, explaining the origins and refreshing Vitamin C rich qualities of the jelly.

Each box contained 8 individually sealed tubs of kabosu jelly.

Each tub is about 5 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height.

The jelly is a translucent light green-yellow colour without much of an aroma.

Served chilled, the jelly is sweet with a mellow yet pleasant citrus flavour that builds to a gentle prominence mid-bite before giving way to the sweetness that returns. The notes of citrus are zesty with refreshing mild acidity – not sharp like lime jelly – which complements the smooth mouthfeel that melts gently in your mouth, making it the perfect dessert for savouring.

This Nabaya Shokuhin Kogyo Kabosu Jelly contained 8 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Tōkyō, Japan in 2018.
