Nanna’s used to be my favourite brand of frozen apple pies growing up. Of late, though, their pastry has taken on an odd flavour that reminds me plastic, so we try this Sara Lee Classic Apple Pie.

This Classic Apple Pie is ‘filled with generous slices of the best seasonally available applies, like Pink Ladies and Granny Smiths and wrapped in golden shortcrust pastry’.
Baking in a preheated oven at 180°C for around 30 minutes results in a golden brown crust dusted with sugar crystals. I have to admit, the photo of the sugar crystals on the crust was the main reason we decided to try this – we’re glad the real product delivered!

Served hot, the golden brown crust of the pie is thin, yet delivered a flavourful buttery flavour with an audible crunch that’s enhanced by the crispy sugar crystals. With the pastry issue resolved, this apple pie goes the extra mile with large slices of apple throughout that retain the slight tartness of Granny Smiths and sweetness of Pink Ladies as well as, critically, a firm bite – almost crunch – without the mushiness of overcooked apples. The base of the pastry is a bit soft, but it’s a minor issue to be expected from the baking tin and doesn’t detract from our enjoyment of the apple pie with its buttery crust and chunky apple innards.
This Sara Lee Classic Apple Pie contained 600 g. It was produced in Australia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2018.
