Always in the mood for some comfort Asian food but wanting a break from our string of Thai restaurants lately, N and I caught up at Kusuka.

Kusuka takes on the warung kopi trend from Indonesia that uses Indo mee in a cafe context to give a modern take on much loved comfort foods, along with some desserts and pretty drinks.

We start with the Disco Princess ($9.00), described as a ‘colour changing disco mocktail of mango lemonade that blows your mind and your taste buds’. The drink is served deconstructed in three parts (right to left) with the butterfly pea tea, lemon juice, and mango nectar.

Adding lemon juice to the butterfly pea tea increases its acidity, changing the liquid into a warm purple colour. The mango nectar sweetens the drink and also sinks to the bottom to result in a beautiful sunset bomb. The beautiful colour changing aspect of drink is the main draw card to this drink as it tastes much like a mango lemonade after stirring.

And this is the Lychee Calamansi House Soda ($6.00). Surprisingly, this drink tastes much like a sweet, floral and citrusy lemonade. Overall, the flavour reminds of a twist on a tropical punch with less acidity.

I go for the Three Little ($15.00), described as Kusuka roasted pork belly with fried egg, chilli matah, butter herbed corn and mushroom.

I really enjoy the comfort of this dish with the runny egg, moreish mushrooms and corn, the freshness of the cucumber, and the crispy and tender pork belly. The flavours are well balanced, although the portion of rice is a tad too generous and soft for my liking.

N’s drawn to hashbrowns and goes for the Krispy Rengang ($18.00), described as ‘fried chicken, hash brown, omelette on a bed of mi goreng (or rice), served with homemade rendang sauce’.

She enjoys the size of the dish with the crunchy batter of the chicken and surprises bits of pork crackling. The omlette is soft while the mi goreng carries enough flavour on its own with a slight spice that the rendang sauce adds too much saltiness to the dish without enough freshness on the plate to balance it out.

Kusuka is a cozy cafe with decent portion sizes, which is a rarity in many modern cafes, and food that’s tasty and well presented. The customer service is also attentive and courteous, making it impossible to leave without feeling fed and positive.
