Cơm Gà Bà Nga Hội An, Cabramatta

This is Cơm Gà Bà Nga Hội An, a restaurant specialising in chicken dishes from Central Vietnam, with a focus on Hội An–style preparations.

Cơm gà đặc biệt ($25.00)

The rice was deeply savoury, carrying a gentle floral pandan note, and worked seamlessly with the tangy, savoury spiced sauce served alongside. The chicken was notably juicy and tender, coated lightly in the same sauce, which complemented both the rice and the accompanying salad without any overt heat. The inclusion of par-cooked unfertilised chicken eggs added textural interest, while the assorted offal—heart, kidney, and liver—was cooked in the same sauce. The heart and kidney were agreeable, though the liver was less successful.

The accompanying “mini” salad was substantial, nearly matching the rice in volume. It consisted of crunchy green papaya dressed with a lightly sweet and tangy seasoning, topped with shredded chicken from the drumstick, wingette, and wing tip. As with the main chicken, the meat remained juicy and tender, and the salad functioned as more than a side, standing as a dish in its own right.

Phở gà đặc biệt ($20.00)

The chicken phở delivered a broth with good depth and clarity, making it a compelling alternative for those preferring chicken over beef. The chicken itself was again juicy and flavourful, and the par-cooked unfertilised eggs provided a pleasing, slightly springy texture. The inclusion of liver and kidney was less appealing here, and a thigh-only version would be preferable in future. The dipping sauce, bright with lime, salt, and pepper, added a lively tang that lifted the chicken further.

Chè bưởi ($6.00)

This Vietnamese pomelo sweet soup was served cold and proved refreshing in warmer weather. Chewy, tapioca-coated cubes of pomelo rind sat alongside sweet mung beans in a creamy coconut milk base, with a deep palm sugar sweetness and a gelatinous, spoon-coating texture. The dish would have benefited from peanuts to introduce nutty flavour and additional textural contrast, but remained cooling and satisfying.

Overall, a strong and cohesive expression of Hội An–style chicken cookery, with consistently well-cooked meat, flavourful rice, and thoughtful accompaniments, albeit with offal that may not appeal to all palates.
