Great Wall Tofu opened in Eastwood in recent years specialising in soybean products. They sell soy milk and soy pudding, as well as fried tofu, and other savoury tofu based dishes.

Sweet Soy Pudding with Sesame Sugar Topping ($3.00)

Familiar with the more robust and intense ginger syrups often encountered at Chinese eateries, the lacklustre nature of this pudding caught me off guard. The tofu’s texture didn’t quite reach the level of silkiness to effortlessly glide off the spoon or down the throat. The sesame sugar introduced a mild textural element, yet it proved inadequate to counterbalance the overall plainness of the tofu.

The black soybean contributed a harmonious and well-calibrated sweetness that complemented the robust soy undertones. The addition of black sesame and black rice brought a layer of nutty complexity to the mix. This encounter was markedly more satisfying compared to the pudding, evoking memories of the delightful soy-centred bubble tea from the now-shuttered Bean Code in Chatswood. This is undoubtedly a product we’d consider purchasing again.
