Nippon Yell Gummy Kagoshima Daimasaki & Beniamanatsu

Nippon Yell Gummy Kagoshima Daimasaki & Beniamanatsu is made with juice from daimasaki and beniamanatsu, two citrus varieties cultivated in Kagoshima Prefecture. Daimasaki, distinguished by a protruding top similar to dekopon, is a locally discovered variety notable for its deep crimson skin and flesh, offering a richer colour than the better-known shiranui. Beniamanatsu, also crimson-skinned, is another Kagoshima-grown citrus, with the prefecture producing the highest volume of this fruit in Japan.

Each gummy measured approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, with a soft orange hue and a vibrant, sweet citrus aroma. A light dusting of fine sugar coated the surface, lending a gentle crunch and initial sweetness. Beneath this was a firm, bouncy shell encasing a softer, jelly-like core.

On tasting, the flavour released immediately was bright and citrus-forward, led by a refined sweetness from the centre. As chewing continued, a deepening acidity emerged from the firmer outer layer, unfolding into a layered citrus profile. The flavour evolved into something closer to a red-fleshed orange, such as cara cara, with sweet, berry-like notes—distinct from the sharper profile of a navel orange or the overt sweetness of a mandarin. The rich, aromatic complexity of the daimasaki combined with the crisp, refreshing quality of beniamanatsu resulted in a balanced interplay of sweetness and tartness.

Texturally dynamic and flavourful, these gummies are a compelling showcase of Kagoshima citrus and merit repurchase.
