This is the Nippon Yell Gummy Yamagata Gassan Grape, featuring the juice of Yama Sauvignon grapes grown in Yamagata Prefecture. Yama Sauvignon is a hybrid of wild grape and Cabernet Sauvignon, unique to Japan, known for its deep colour and the sharp acidity characteristic of Yamagata Prefecture.

Each gummy measured approximately 2 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, with an opaque brown hue and a sweet red grape aroma.

On tasting, the exterior offered a mellow sweetness but lacked the gentle crunch of sugar crystals. This quickly gave way to the gummy’s firm, bouncy texture, which then softened into a jelly-like core. By the third chew, the initial sweetness deepened, releasing a sharp acidity mid-bite for a juicy grape flavour. However, the aromatic quality was more subdued than that of Delaware grapes, also cultivated in Yamagata Prefecture, with a milder, fresher grape flavour that spread across the palate with minimal muskiness. The fresh aroma and acidity of these Gassan grapes were well captured in these gummies, making them worth purchasing.
