This is the Seiki Yomogi Mochi. It consisted of mochi embedded with powdered yomogi or mugwort, which is native to China, Japan and Korea.

Each bag contained 12 pieces, each with an organic shape, around 3 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in height.

The outer layer of kinako brought forth a robust nutty flavour while employing less sugar than the norm. This allowed the sweetness to be carried by the sugar integrated into the mochi itself. As for the mochi’s texture, it was notably firmer and slightly less soft than the typical mochi, retaining its shape when picked up, offering a bit more bite and chew. The yomogi flavour was immediately apparent upon the first bite, presenting a subtle herbaceous and grassy taste with a faint undertone of bitterness. Additionally, the yomogi powder’s presence on the palate could be discerned, adding a distinct element to the otherwise smooth mochi texture, which did not hinder the overall enjoyment.
This Seiki Yomogi Mochi contained 180 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2023.
