Bà Ngoại Miền Tây, Bankstown

This is Bà Ngoại Miền Tây, a stall in Bankstown known for its fried bananas, a beloved Vietnamese street food.

Fried Banana ($2.50)

The bananas were flattened, coated in a tapioca batter with black sesame seeds, and double-fried to achieve an exceptionally crisp exterior. The sesame imparted a faintly smoky nuttiness that complemented the sweetness of the fruit. Inside, the lady finger banana was soft, creamy, and richly sweet, creating a satisfying contrast to the crunchy coating.

Despite its somewhat unrefined, fish-like appearance, the fried banana inside delivered a deeply nostalgic pleasure, reminiscent of a Vietnamese-style McDonald’s apple pie—distinct in flavour yet offering similar comfort and satisfaction, all at a modest price. The stall’s team continually prepared fresh batches, ensuring each serving retained its crispness and warmth.

Overall, a satisfying Vietnamese street snack, freshly fried and excellent value.

Bà Ngoại Miền Tây is located in Liberty Plaza, 256 Chapel Rd, Bankstown NSW 2200.
