Mochi Donuts, Sydney

Mochi doughnuts have an unparalleled bouncy texture and we’re beyond pleased that there’s a Mochi Donuts storefront close to Wynyard Station.

The doughnuts were $4.00 each, $22.00 for 6, or $36.00 for 12.

This is the Cinnamon Donut, the most basic of doughnuts and serves as the best measure of the quality of a doughnut shop. And this one? We’re thrilled that it’s absolutely delicious — the doughnut was tender, soft, and bouncy, and covered generously in the perfect ratio of cinnamon sugar that was neither too bitter from too much cinnamon nor too sweet.

We could inhale a box of these with no help and still want more. All the flavoured doughnuts used the same doughnut base, so we were off to a great start.

This is the Chocolate Donut. Initially, we weren’t too excited to try this doughnut but it turned out to be our favourite after just the cinnamon doughnut. The chocolate coating was thick and crisp, and importantly had the rich and creamy mouthfeel of refined, not cheap, chocolate that elevated this rather pedestrian flavour and made for a very enjoyable experience.

This is the Mango Donut. The same thick and crisp mango icing on this doughnut was too much here, alas. While it had a bright mango flavour, it was too sweet and was not balanced with any acidity to capture the freshness of the fruit.

This is the Biscoff Donut. The thinner icing gave a caramelised flavour with the biscuit crumbs adding a contrasting soft texture. We enjoyed it (much to our surprise) and placed it third behind the chocolate flavour.

This is the Black Sesame Donut. We are huge fans of black sesame, and this one delivered on the deep nuttiness in both the icing and the black sesame seeds atop. Sadly, though, the ground black sesame also added an unpleasant grittiness to the icing, which was also too thick and sweet.

This is the Lavender Tea Donut. The lavender notes were very delicate in the icing and could be significantly stronger to deliver a bolder floral flavour before it risked being soapy.

Overall, the doughnuts at Mochi Donuts had the same bouncy texture as the ones from Demochi Donut Bar, but had the added advantages of being more affordable and more accessible. As for the flavours, the original and most basic were executed very well, but we’d give the flavoured ones a miss on return.

Mochi Donuts is located at MetCentre, 60  Margaret St, Sydney NSW 2000.
