A yuzu flavoured green tea was one of my first looseleaf purchases when yuzu was still an exotic flavour in Australia and I’d been so satisfied with the one from Lupicia that it’s taken me a while to get around to trying this Fukujuen Yuzu Sencha I’d picked up.

The tea consisted of a pyramid tea bagged sencha scented with yuzu.

Steeping one 2 g tea bag in 150 mL of water at 75ºC for 70 seconds, the infusion was a clear yellow green colour with a bright and fragrant yuzu aroma. Served hot, the yuzu notes begin mellow and build to a sharp, zesty prominence in the body before the vegetal notes of the sencha came through with slight astringency in the finish and a hint of yuzu lingering in the aftertaste.

The Lupicia Yuzu Green Tea — also a yuzu flavoured sencha — has a remarkably similar flavour in aroma and taste. The Lupicia does distinguish itself, though, as it’s a looseleaf with more whole — less broken — leaves at a more affordable price by weight at more accessible locations, making it the preferred tea.

This Fukujuen Yuzu Sencha contained 5 x 2 g tea bags. The tea originated in Japan and was purchased in Uji, Kyōto, Japan in 2015.
