Home Thai, Sydney

After a ridiculously busy second half to 2018, D and I caught up with N and T for dinner at Home Thai, one of the most popular Thai restaurants.

The restaurant is set up in a dark, semi-industrial space with a large open kitchen to one side.

This is T’s Soft Shell Crab Salad ($20.00).

The pieces of soft shell crab were crispy and well seasoned but the dish fell down on the salad. The salad was composed mostly of sliced onion and spring onion mixed with far too much fish sauce for a very salty onion flavour that overwhelmed the scarce slithers of green papaya.

This is my Pad Thai with pork ($12.00).

The portions here are very generous compared to elsewhere. The noodles are the thinner rice ones with an enjoyable al dente texture with the sweet, savoury and sour notes of the sauce balanced well and soaking into the noodles. The sauce itself has a gentle heat with an extra side of chilli flakes, sugar and peanuts to adjust the flavour to taste.

This is N’s Pad Thai Glass Noodle with chicken ($12.00).

She enjoyed the chewiness of the glass noodles, which carried the flavour of the sauce well, but felt that the change in the texture of the noodles did not immediately bring to mind pad thai.

This is D’s Stir-Fried Fat Noodle with chicken ($12.00).

He thoroughly enjoyed the balance of flavours in this dish, which could be appreciated even through the intense heat and spiciness that left him sweating profusely. It’s a promising restaurant when they can execute dishes with an enthusiastically spiced heat that doesn’t overwhelm the flavours of the other ingredients in the dish.

Home Thai is located at Shop 1-2, 299 Sussex Street, Sydney NSW 2000.
