This is the Yogurt Mix of the much loved Morinaga Hi-Chew, which has the same promised ‘immensely fruity, intensely chewy’ flavour and texture as those made in Japan. It contained three flavours: plain yogurt, strawberry yogurt, and blueberry yogurt.

This is the plain yogurt. The candy is an opaque white colour throughout with a aroma that recalled a yoghurt drink like Calpis or Yakult. Upon tasting, the candy tastes much the same as Calpis, with a pleasant acidic sweetness that’s just a bit sharper than the drink. There’s no hint of dairy, and we enjoy this flavour the most of the three. It’s a real shame that there was only one of this flavour in a bag of 18.

This is the strawberry yoghurt, which contained strawberry jam, strawberry juice concentrate. The candy has an opaque pale pink centre surrounded by an opaque white exterior with a sweet strawberry aroma. Upon tasting, the initial sharpness from the yoghurt gave a slight plasticky flavour before the strawberry flavour builds on chewing to result in a muted strawberry that’s sweet and light acidic and without the punchiness of the original non-yoghurt strawberry flavour.

This is the blueberry yoghurt, which is flavoured artificially. The candy has an opaque purple centre surrounded by an opaque white exterior with a sweet berry aroma. Upon tasting, an initial sweetness does not immediately register as blueberry until half way through the chew where it came through gently to recall the more modestly flavoured fresh fruit rather than the more punchy quality of artificial flavours. The flavour tastes natural with a hint of acidity in the background to remind of the yoghurt.
This Morinaga Hi-Chew Yogurt Mix contained 90 g or 18 pieces. It was produced in Taiwan and received as a gift from family visiting from the United States in 2019.
