We popped into Bondi Pizza to catch up with N and T (and a second lunch!) back in October to satisfy N’s lingering pizza cravings.
This is the Lychee Mocktail Jug (1 litre, $19.00.95). Each glass contained 1 canned lychee. The mocktail is a mix of the floral, tropical notes of lychee with the freshness of mint. As is, the sweetness is strong, but diluted with some water, it’s a refreshing and tasty beverage to wash down the pizza.
This is the Starter Share Plate ($39.00.95), a share plate of their four best selling starters. The Smokey BBQ Chicken Wings (front, left) delivered on stickiness and flavour, while the Salt & Pepper Calamari (front, right), ‘crumbed and lightly seasoned with Murray River salt flakes and Sichuan pepper served with a side of aioli’ were tasty but did not deliver on spicy heat. The Arancini Balls, ‘fried risotto balls with Fontina, tomato, herbs and feta’, were a huge disappointment with a nauseatingly prominent funky cheese flavour that none of us enjoyed.
The Sizzling Chilli Prawns (previous photo, back, left), ‘chilli prawns served in a sizzling “hot pot” with flat bread and a side of chilli mayo’ were juicy and tender, and we enjoyed mopping up the dips with the flatbread immensely. We needed more!
This is the Seafood Marinara Classic Pizza (12″, $26.00.95) with ‘tomato, garlic, parsley, marinated chilli prawns, calamari, clams and mussels drizzled with a light chilli oil and fresh basil. Served with a wedge of lemon.’
Seafood pizzas are one of my favourite and this one is no exception with the the base providing a crisp and sturdy base for the seafood. We’re not fans of including the clam shells on the pizza as it’s purely for presentation, but that aside, the seafood was fresh and tender and well balanced with the flavours of the base.
This is the Peking Deluxe (12″, $26.00.95), which is a ‘delicious blend of roasted duck and roasted chicken on a hoi sin base topped with shallows, cucumber and coriander and drizzled with a light glaze’.
A duck pizza is something new for us, and the mix of duck, ho sin sauce and cucumber conjure vivid recollections of peking duck pancakes with the added (and much enjoyed) luxury of a crispy, sturdy base. The coriander added just that extra freshness.
Overall, the pizzas at Bondi Pizza delivered on novelty, presentation and flavour, and we’d be keen to return when we’re after something more substantial than Domino’s.
