Scoop Wholefoods, Chatswood

Scoop Wholefoods was founded in 2013, inspired by the zero-waste shopping practices of markets and grocery stores in its founders’ hometown of Malta, in the same vein as Slowood in Hong Kong. We visited the newly opened Chatswood Chase location.

Umami Activated Nuts

The activation process gave the nuts a light crunch and a mellow yet deep savoury quality from the tamari, with a very subtle wasabi spice in the finish. However, the overall flavour was not particularly compelling, making it unlikely for a repurchase.

Organic Toffee Almond & Fig Rocky Rad

The fig contributed a rich, earthy sweetness, with its seeds providing a popping candy-like crunch. The overall sweetness was high, but the flavour was more enjoyable than the dark chocolate version, as it had a smoother, toffee-like chocolate quality without the bitterness. The almonds added a pleasant crunch, while the coconut was present but less chewy.

Organic Dark Chocolate Rocky Road

This had a flavour reminiscent of fruit cake, with minimal sweetness from the dark chocolate and a notable bitterness. The peanuts added a satisfying crunch, but the cranberries accentuated the chocolate’s acidity and had a raisin-like texture, which was less enjoyable. The coconut contributed a chewiness that lingered in the finish. Overall, it was acceptable but not one to repurchase.

Moon Macas

Each piece measured approximately 2.5–3 cm in diameter. The chocolate was rich and creamy with a low melting point, while the caramelised honey added a crisp texture that contrasted with the macadamia’s crunch. However, the combination of chocolate and honey made the overall flavour overly sweet, overshadowing the mild buttery notes of the macadamia.

Australian Pineapple

Each pineapple ring measured approximately 7 cm in diameter and tasted sweet and juicy, much like fresh ripe pineapple. It was rich and flavourful, with a delightful chew that was not fibrous. This was a standout and worth repurchasing. It tasted just like the ones from Japan but was far more accessible and lacked the added sugar found in the semi-dried version from Coles, making it well worth the higher price.
