This is the Hōjicha Chestnut Latte ($9.80, +$2.00 for large; less ice, fixed sugar) from Kamakura Warabimochi, featuring warabi mochi, hōjicha and roasted chestnut.
The beverage presented with a layered appearance, with semi-translucent warabimochi at the base beneath a deep-brown hōjicha latte, topped with whipped cream, golden candied chestnut cubes and kuromitsu.
Stirred well before consumption, the warabimochi dominated much of the first half of the beverage, contributing sweet, melt-in-the-mouth blobs of jelly-like softness while leaving insufficient space for the hōjicha to come through. The chestnut was confined to the candied cubes on top of the whipped cream, with no discernible chestnut flavour through the hōjicha latte itself.
By the time most of the warabimochi had been consumed, the whipped cream had blended into the hōjicha latte, increasing its creaminess while further diluting the roasted character of the tea. The candied chestnuts contributed little chestnut flavour, instead functioning primarily as small cubes of starchy texture with mellow nuttiness that reinforced the roasted nuttiness of the hōjicha. Kuromitsu added sweetness without substantially altering the underlying flavour structure.
Overall, a hōjicha latte with a front-loaded flavour trajectory and poorly integrated texture, resulting in a disjointed structure where the warabimochi dominated early, the whipped cream diluted the tea later, and the chestnut remained largely confined to the topping. As a seasonal variation, it lacked cohesion, with the chestnut functioning more as a topping than as an integrated flavour component.
This Hōjicha Chestnut Latte was purchased from Kamakura Warabimochi in Sydney, Australia in August 2026.
