This is Rams Indian & Sri Lankan Food, a hidden takeout joint that’s been hidden inside an anonymous arcade away from the bustle of the main street near Flemington Station for the past 20 years.
The misleading sign says it’s available for eat-in or takeaway, but it’s clear from a glance that it’s just a take out joint with a constant stream of customers from all backgrounds.
We’re here for the lamb rolls ($1.30), which we used to enjoy from the Indo Lankan Food Bar near Seven Hills Station.
These were around 10 cm in length and 3 cm in diameter, and filled with a filling of shredded lamb and potato. The filling is well spiced — but not overwhelmingly spicy — and balanced well by the gentle sweetness of the stewed onion.
Of course, there are numerous other fried pastries available, including fish or potato as well as dosai, curries, lenti cakes as well as string hoppers. They’re probably what most other people purchase, but it’s the quick, tasty and affordable lamb rolls that we pick up every time.
