Dera Uma is the third of the triplet sister stores serving classic Japanese fare in Skyview Plaza that N and I always passed up for in favour of Mappen Noodle Bar or Oiden. Its seating area in the thoroughfare of the plaza rather than in its own space was a bit off putting. But with Oiden closed for renovations in February and a craving for Japanese curry rice, we fulfilled our curiosity for Dera Uma.
This is the Curry & Beef Hamburger (regular, $9.90) with an added Ontama ($1.50) because there is always space for runny eggs in my stomach.
The curry had a pleasant sweetness, which is typical of Japanese curries, with a gentle heat and just enough to go with the rice. Unfortunately, the rice was slightly overcooked, so too soft to hold up against the wet curry and left the dish missing that delicious moreish mouthfeel when eating curry. The hamburger was flavourful, although it could’ve been more juicy and tender. Overall, though, the dish satisfied my craving for Japanese curry even though it wasn’t the best.
Our first visit to Oiden wasn’t a hit either, so I’m willing to return to try other items on their menu.
