After a long day that ended in freezing drizzle at the Hirosaki Castle autumn light-up, we returned to Hiroro in search of a warm evening meal. The plan had been to try the newly opened ramen shop, advertised to launch on 8 November. However, by the time we arrived, the restaurant had already sold out for the day, leaving only the queue control signs in place.
Instead, we turned to Naan Curry House, the adjacent stall in the same food court, drawn in by its affordable prices and the fact that meals were prepared by Indian staff. The store boldly promised “a set of authentic Indian curry and naan made by an Indian chef for Japanese people.”

Butter Chicken Curry Set (¥1000, includes butter chicken, naan, salad, and drink, +¥200 for extra naan)
Both naans were freshly stretched and baked to order by the chef behind the counter, while the butter chicken curry was heated individually in a saucepan over the stove. The result was unexpectedly excellent in both flavour and texture—especially considering the food court setting.
The butter chicken delivered a rich tomato base with a well-balanced creamy and spiced buttery flavour, including at least four sizeable, juicy pieces of chicken thigh. The naan was equally impressive—each piece over 30 cm in length, with a crisp base, tender interior, and no greasiness. They proved to be ideal for mopping up the curry. As a distinctly Japanese touch, the set came with a glass of ōlong tea and a side of salad topped with sesame dressing.
It was a surprisingly satisfying meal—well-executed, generous in portion, and excellent value. Were this stall located in Sydney, it would be a frequent go-to.
Naan Curry House is located inside Hiroro Kitchen, 4F Hiroro, 9-20 Ekimaecho, Hirosaki, 〒036-8003 Aomori, Japan.
