Sometime in July, what was Comebuy on Friday evening became QQ Tea on Monday. At the same location with the same staff and layout, we were surprised to find the branding and decor updated. We’re disappointed that the large Passion Fruit Blast is no longer $5.00 (now $6.50, which is more in line with other Taiwan-style beverage shops), but there are new items on its now more extensive menu.
2018
This is the Pearl Filled Egg Waffle ($6.20) with tapioca pearls – the kind usually in bubble tea – throughout.
These egg waffles are baked to order and have a fragrant eggy aroma. The eggy flavour doesn’t carry through to the taste as in the earlier egg waffles from Comebuy, though, as the batter has changed to one that’s sweeter and less eggy. We prefer the eggier flavour, but the pearls mixed throughout the batter are surprisingly enjoyable, adding pops of chewiness in between the more spongey egg waffle batter. With the sweetness of the batter, we’re glad the pearls don’t add more sweetness. That said, it’s mostly texture, rather than flavour, that they bring.
2019
After enjoying the purple sticky rice in the wave of yoghurt drinks sweeping Sydney, I was excited by the addition of this the Purple Rice Egg Waffle ($5.50) to the selection at QQ Tea.
Whereas the purple sticky rice is chewy in the yoghurt drinks, here, the purple rice is rather overcooked. This gave it a gentle sweetness and a soft texture without any of the sought after chew and leaves it much the same texture as the egg waffle itself. It’s difficult to distinguish the purple rice from the egg waffle and so adds very little to the overall texture or taste. I’d stick to my usual, the pearl filled egg waffle.
