Originally a bustling night market stall in Burwood Chinatown, Geprek moved its Indonesian street food experience to a more permanent location upstairs on Level 1. With one of D’s colleagues raving about their ayam geprek (lit. ‘crushed chicken’), an Indonesian dish of crispy battered fried chicken crushed and mixed with hot and spicy sambal, we decided to try for ourselves.
Geprek Sambalado (weak) medium spicy ($15.00), ‘signature Indonesian sambal terasi served with crispy chicken, white rice and cucumber’.
The portion was generous, with a hearty bed of rice beneath a layer of crushed chicken. The chicken was juicy and tender, covered in a sauce that delivered an explosive mix of shrimp, garlic, and a slight sweetness, with a notable spicy undertone that left a lingering, enjoyable burn. The fluffy rice provided just enough relief from the sauce, and the cucumber added a refreshing touch. However, we were disappointed that the chicken lost its crispiness due to the sauce.
Overall, this hearty and enjoyable meal at a reasonable price was a unique offering for Sydney, but not something we would choose again over other options available at Burwood.
