We tried these Dr Oetker Papa Giuseppi’s Pizza Pies Mega Meaty to see if we couldn’t scratch a minor pizza craving.
Each box has two individually sealed pizza pies around 15 cm in diameter and 2 cm deep. This Mega Meaty version is described as ‘a deep dish pizza base topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, slices of mini pepperoni, pork crumble and bacon’.
We baked these pizza pies in a fan-forced oven at 180°C for 25 minutes, with the moreish aroma of a meat lovers’ pizza filling the kitchen.
The taste of the toppings of these pizza pies remind us more of the good, old recipe for their Deep Pan Bakehouse Crust Pizzas: the size of the meat has reduced in proportion to the size but the flavour and quality are there along with the rich tomato sauce. The pizza base, though, is nothing remarkable – it’s sturdy enough to hold the pizza innards but thin and unsubstantial, much like the cardboard bases in other frozen pizzas. The highlight of these pizza pies is their snack size, making them convenient and neat to prepare and eat.
