Originally a traditional Indonesian dish, the Malaysian version of beef rendang is a similar slow-cooked curry dish where beef is simmered in a coconut milk-based sauce infused with a blend of spices, resulting in tender meat with rich, aromatic flavours. This is the Red Rock Deli Potato Chips Chef Series Malaysian Beef Rendang formulated in collaboration with Poh Ling Yeow, a Malaysian-Australian cook.
The chips were coated in an orange-red seasoning, emanating a vivid and unmistakable aroma reminiscent of beef rendang. Upon tasting, the hearty and robust beef flavours took the lead with each bite, evolving into the rich and intricate notes of spices like lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, and ginger. As the bite progressed, the spices lingered while the pronounced creaminess of coconut emerged. The intricate taste profile of these chips, which adeptly balanced the velvety coconut foundation with the fragrant spices, truly paid homage to this essential Malaysian dish. While this might not be a flavour we would actively seek again, its execution was precise and justified the purchase.
