This is the Raguenaeu Apple Komachi Pie.
Each piece measured approximately 4 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in height, featuring a golden-yellow, egg-washed exterior and a mild buttery magarine aroma reminiscent of Taiwanese pineapple cake.
On tasting, the pastry carried a pronounced margarine flavour, with a light, flaky texture akin to the lard or shortening-based dough of a Cantonese wife cake. This delicate exterior enclosed a white bean paste filling with the creamy, smooth texture typical of Japanese wagashi. However, despite the yellow interior suggesting an apple component (derived from apple syrup juice and apple juice concentrate), the apple flavour was subtle to the point of being nearly imperceptible, offering only a hint of acidity. While the richness of the pastry was enjoyable, a more pronounced sweet-tart apple filling would have provided a better balance and enhanced the overall experience.
