I’ve a penchant for limited edition KitKat, but before we get into the new flavours we picked up in Japan, this is Nestlé KitKat Mandarin Orange, which was manufactured in Malaysia in time for Lunar New Year.
Using mandarin oranges as the flavour for Lunar New Year is an obvious choice given the tradition of giving mandarin oranges. The tradition is known as song gam (literally, giving gold) and is a popular symbol conferring prosperity and well wishes to the recipient.
These were full length KitKat rather than the minibars from Japan. They’re standard KitKat wafers enrobed in a mandarin orange flavoured milk chocolate.
The KitKat has a bright zesty aroma that recalled orange flavoured chocolate. Upon tasting, the mandarin orange notes in the enrobing milk chocolate came through bold and persist into the body before some welcome relief in the body on reaching the wafer, which is a standard wafer with the typical sandwiching cream. However, the zesty mandarin flavour returns in the finish with a mouth numbing tingliness characteristic of orange citrus. We’re not fans of orange and chocolate together, but these KitKat would be easily enjoyed by those who enjoy the combination.
This Nestlé KitKat Mandarin Orange contained 136 g or 8 pieces. It was produced in Malaysia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2019.
