Meiji introduced the inaugural gummy candy in Japan as Cola Up back in 1980. These gummies are rated at the maximum 5/5 on Meiji’s scale, which measures the softness to hardness of gummy candies. The super hard texture is recommended for those seeking a gummy that allows for focused concentration.
Each gummy took the form of a miniature cola bottle, with approximate dimensions of 2.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm and emitted a distinct cola aroma. However, upon tasting, the initial flavour from the gummy’s surface coating was reminiscent of corn starch, which was somewhat unusual. The texture was notably firm and rubbery, akin to biting into a piece of rubber, and it offered substantial resistance when chewed. This texture lacked the soft elasticity commonly associated with Japanese gummies amd rated 2-3/5 on Meiji’s scale.
Fortunately, after just a few chews, the cola flavour emerged, masking the initial cornstarch taste. The cola flavour became pronounced mid-bite, presenting a rich taste characterized by a subtle acidity and evident sweetness in each bite. However, the typical zesty lemon component found in cola flavours was somewhat subdued. In sum, these cola gummies were enjoyable, but we found the preference for a more lemony cola flavour and the softer elasticity found in typical Japanese gummies to be more satisfying.
