This Peters Drumstick x Messina Roasted Hazelnut is another of the four flavours Peters released in collaboration with Gelato Messina. We enjoyed the Mango & Salted Coconut earlier.
It’s described as ‘a unique Messina hazelnut sauce swirled through indulgent chocolate gelato, topped with roasted hazelnuts all the way from Cortemilia in Italy’. It contained 3.9% roasted hazelnuts from Cortemilia, which Messina explains were chosen for three reasons:
- they’re IGP grown and cultivated from the area to which they’re native,
- they’re roasted to the point where there is minimal moisture left in the nut meaning it shatters in your mouth when eaten while still retaining that wonderful hazelnut flavour,
- they have a fine skin that’s completely removed from the nut after roasting and so avoids incorporating the bitter flavour from the skin once milled.
Using these quality hazelnuts, the hazelnut sauce is made by Messina themselves using a recipe reformulated from their pistachio fudge and sent off to the Peters factory to be used in the range.
The hazelnut sauce (the beige coloured sauce seen on top with ribbons throughout) is the highlight to this ice cream with its gooey hazel-nutty fudgy texture. We enjoy the crunch of the roasted hazelnuts on top, but its the rich and fragrant flavour of the hazelnut sauce that rises above all other flavours in the cone including the smooth and creamy hazelnut gelato itself as well as the stronger chocolate notes as we reach the cone.
This Peters Drumstick x Messina Roasted Hazelnut contained 475 mL or 4 ice creams. It was produced in Australia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2019.
