The smell caramelised aroma of baked sweet potatoes is ubiquitous in Don Quijote stores in Japan. In October 2023, after eight months of development, Don Quijote released the Creet Do Jonetz Donki no Yakiimo no Gumi, a gummy candy version of their famous baked sweet potatoes. The gummy contains sweet potato (satsuma imo) powder.

Each gummy mimicked the appearance of a miniature half-peeled baked sweet potato, with the purple end resembling unpeeled skin and the yellow end resembling exposed flesh. Sized at 3 x 1.8 x 0.7 cm, they emitted a roast sweet potato aroma reminiscent of the first floor of Don Quijote, yet with a subtle sweetness that avoided being overly sugary. Upon tasting, their texture fell around a 4 out of 5 on the Meiji softness to hardness scale, with a gentle sweetness that gradually intensified alongside the caramelized flavour of baked sweet potato, yet remained balanced without overwhelming. However, while it was interesting to taste, this flavour wouldn’t be one we’d choose to repurchase.
This Creet Do Jonetz Donki no Yakiimo no Gumi contained 60 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Hong Kong in 2023.
