This is the Magokoro Farm Co Do Jonetz Aomori Apple Chocolate. It was produced from Fuji apples grown in Aomori, a prefecture in Japan famous for its production of apples.

The apples were ‘made into dried fruits with a semi-raw texture and wrapped in moist milk chocolate’. Each piece varied in size from 1-2 cm at its widest, was coated in a dusting of cocoa powder and had a rich chocolate aroma.

Upon tasting, the chocolate revealed a hint of cocoa bitterness before smoothly melting on contact with the palate just before encountering the apple. The semi-dried apple retained a soft crunch, and the bold sweetness of the Fuji apple took centre stage, brightening the lightly sweetened milk chocolate and the coating of bitter cocoa. However, the identifiable crisp apple notes were somewhat subdued, and beyond its sweetness and a subtle hint of crisp sour freshness in the finish, the apple contributed mostly to the crunchy and juicy texture. While we appreciated the taste and texture of the apples and the quality of the chocolate coating, a more mellow chocolate to allow for a more pronounced apple presence would have been welcomed.
