Sweet, flavoured konjac jelly was going through a wave of increased popularity during our visit to Japan in 2018. It was everywhere, from the numerous pharmacies (that sell little real medicine) to the less prevalent supermarkets to frequent ads on television.

Orihiro was a popular brand that we’d enjoyed in Australia before in lychee flavour. This here was Orihiro Purunto Konnyaku Jelly Nashi.

The jellies were made with konjac powder from Gunma Prefecture in Japan and came in plastic envelopes about 5 x 4 cm.

The jelly was translucent and colourless with a lightly sweet aroma of nashi pear on the nose coming through in the most delicious way on tasting. The intensity of the nashi flavour developed with a light acidity mid-bite like the crisp sweetness of a nashi pear at peak ripeness before receding to a refreshing sweetness in the finish. The mouthfeel was addictively bouncy and smooth, and together with delicious flavour, these were impeccable jelly pouches worth every cent.

This Orihiro Purunto Konnyaku Jelly Nashi contained 6 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2018.
