This Seika Foods Bontan Ame is a type of buntan (a kind of pomelo) flavoured gyūhi mochi confectionery that originated in Kagoshima in 1924 as a rival to Morinaga’s Milk Caramel.

Each piece of candy is 2 x 2 x 1 cm in size and opaque orange colour. The candy is soft to touch and wrapped in an edible outer layer of rice paper. Upon tasting, the rice paper dissolves on contact without any flavour before a mellow yet rich citrus flavour came through with gentle sweet-sour notes of pomelo — somewhere between a lemon and orange but without the prominent acidity or zestiness — that persist through into the aftertaste. The candy has a soft, chewy texture that’s firmer than usual mochi with a more addictive bounciness than a caramel, although it does stick to the teeth somewhat.
