We’re accustomed to the flavours of Morinaga Hi-Chew from Japan, but the United States have their own manufactured in Taiwan under licence from Japan. This Original Mix contained grape, green apple and strawberry.
This is the Grape flavour, which contained red grape juice concentrate. The candy has a sweet grape aroma with a purple centre surrounded by a white exterior that’s opposite to the one produced in Japan, which featured a white centre surrounded by a light purple exterior. Upon tasting, bright notes of red grape persist from the start through to the finish with a sweet acidity that’s very much like the juice itself and recalled the same flavour as the one produced in Japan.
This is the Green Apple flavour, which contained apple juice concentrate. The candy has a pale green centre surrounded by a white exterior. Upon tasting, crisp notes of apple recalling apple peel came through before the sweetness builds to prominence mid-bite and persisted through to the finish with a gentle acidity. I don’t have records of the Japanese version but it doesn’t taste like
This is the Strawberry flavour, which contained strawberry juice concentrate. The candy has a pale pink centre surrounded by a white exterior. Upon tasting, bright strawberry notes came through with a pleasant acidity in the body that balances the sweetness and avoids the flavour from being artificial.
Overall, these Hi-Chew produced in Taiwan under licence are comparable in both texture and flavour to the original produced in Japan that we enjoy so much.
This Morinaga Hi-Chew Original Mix contained 100 g or 18 pieces. It was produced in Taiwan and received as a gift from family visiting from the United States in 2019.
