With international travel still closed and no Japan trip on the horizon, I satisfied my penchant for limited edition Japanese snacks with imports from upmarket Asian grocery stores. This is the Nestlé KitKat Ume.

The foil-sealed minibars each feature the same plum blossom watercolour drawings as the main bag.

The mini bar is a pastel green colour and contained a cream flavoured with ume powder sandwiching the wafers that are enrobed in white chocolate that’s been flavoured with ume.

The Kitkat has a gently tart aroma of ume that came through with bright fruity, honey-like sweetness the peaked in the body before the ume powder in the sandwiching the wafers leaves a refreshing acidity in the finish ahead of the sweetness returning to linger in the aftertaste. In comparison to the Heiwa Shouzu Umeshu Kitkat, the aroma of this KitKat is tarter and without the hint of sharpness, but the overall flavour of the umeshu flavour has more depth, capturing the complex sweet-sour notes of the ume fruit itself.
This Nestlé KitKat Ume contained 13 x 9.9 g minibars. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2021.
